Russian Drone Attack on Kyiv Injures 11, Ignites Residential Fires, Ukraine Reports
KYIV, May 4 (Reuters) — In the latest escalation of the ongoing conflict, a Russian overnight drone attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv left at least 11 people injured, including two children, and caused multiple residential fires, local military authorities and city officials reported on Sunday.
The aerial assault, one of the largest in recent weeks, saw debris from intercepted drones igniting blazes across several districts in the city. Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, confirmed on social media that falling drone debris sparked fires in residential areas within the Obolonskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts.
Firefighters Battle Blazes Across Kyiv
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service stated via its official Telegram channel that 76 firefighters were deployed overnight to tackle the fires, which included a minor blaze in the central Shevchenkivskyi district.
The agency shared dramatic images of firefighters working through the night to extinguish large flames consuming what appeared to be residential buildings.
Additionally, several vehicles throughout the city were set ablaze by falling drone fragments, causing widespread damage and heightened anxiety among Kyiv residents, many of whom were forced to take cover in shelters during the attack.
Air Defence in Action
Witnesses on the ground reported hearing multiple explosions throughout the night, widely believed to be air defence systems intercepting incoming drones. The Ukrainian military later confirmed that its air defence units successfully shot down 69 out of 165 drones launched by Russia overnight.
In a statement on Telegram, Ukraine’s armed forces noted that around 80 drones were either neutralized through electronic warfare techniques or were drone simulators without explosive payloads.
There was no immediate official response from Moscow regarding the overnight attacks.
Attacks Beyond Kyiv: Cherkasy Also Targeted
The assault on Kyiv was part of a broader overnight drone campaign against Ukraine. Cherkasy, a city in central Ukraine, was also heavily targeted, according to national television reports.
Out of 22 drones launched at Cherkasy, 15 were successfully shot down, but several still managed to hit their targets.
"The regional centre was hit the hardest. Residential infrastructure, warehouses at a furniture factory, a shopping centre, and garden buildings were damaged," reported Ihor Taburets, the governor of Cherkasy region, via Telegram.
Ukraine's emergency services confirmed that one person sustained injuries in the Cherkasy attack, and that fires broke out at multiple residential and civilian infrastructure sites.
Uncertain Ceasefire Talks
The overnight assaults occurred against the backdrop of speculation over a potential temporary ceasefire during Russia’s Victory Day commemorations from May 8-10, marking the Soviet Union’s triumph in World War Two.
On Monday, Russia declared a three-day ceasefire for the Victory Day period. In response, Kyiv proposed an extended 30-day ceasefire. However, as of now, neither side has formally agreed on terms, and cross-border attacks and military operations have continued.
Both Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians in the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine over three years ago. Nevertheless, civilian areas in multiple Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv and Cherkasy, continue to suffer heavy damage from drone and missile strikes.
A Deadly Trend of Drone Warfare
The use of drones has intensified significantly in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with both nations relying on them for offensive and defensive operations. In particular, Russia has increasingly utilized cheap, mass-produced drones to overwhelm Ukrainian air defences and target energy infrastructure, residential neighbourhoods, and supply chains.
Ukraine, in turn, has bolstered its air defence systems with assistance from Western allies, managing to intercept a significant percentage of incoming drones and missiles.
Despite these defensive successes, falling debris from destroyed drones has become a persistent hazard for civilians, causing property damage, fires, and casualties, as demonstrated in the latest attacks.
