Dax Shepard Says He’s Willing to Donate His Brain to Science — If His Kids Approve

Hollywood actor, comedian, and podcast host Dax Shepard has made an unusual yet thoughtful revelation — he’s willing to donate his brain to science after he dies, but only if his children give their blessing.

The 50-year-old actor, best known for his roles in films like Without a Paddle, Employee of the Month, and CHiPs, as well as for hosting the popular podcast Armchair Expert, shared his willingness during a recent episode of the show. The conversation took an unexpected turn when guest Christopher Nowinski, a neuroscientist and co-founder of the Concussion Legacy Foundation, raised the topic of brain donation.

A Conversation About Brain Health and CTE

During the episode, Nowinski spoke about chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) — a serious and progressive brain disease found in people who have suffered repeated head injuries, such as athletes, military veterans, and victims of accidents. CTE has been a hot topic in recent years, especially in professional sports like American football and boxing, where concussions are common.

Nowinski, who has been actively campaigning for brain research and awareness around traumatic brain injuries, shared that part of his mission involves asking people whether they’ve ever considered donating their brains to science.

He casually asked both Shepard and his co-host Monica Padman if they would be open to the idea — and surprisingly, both agreed without hesitation.

Shepard’s Candid and Humorous Response

“I'd be happy to. I really don't care what happens to my body afterwards,” Shepard replied in his signature laid-back and humorous style.

Monica Padman also agreed, saying, “If my brain could be of any help, why not?”

Shepard then playfully added, “I’m delighted to donate my brain. Do I have to officially go to a website or something?” — prompting laughter in the studio. His lighthearted approach to a serious topic is part of what has made Armchair Expert such a hit, blending humor with deep and often important conversations.

A Family Decision

Although Shepard was more than willing to make the donation, he did note that it’s a decision he would want to clear with his family, particularly his two daughters, Lincoln, 11, and Delta, 9, whom he shares with his wife, actress Kristen Bell.

“[I have to] double-check my children have no plans for my brain. Once they sign off on it—” Shepard joked.

To this, Nowinski responded with a laugh, saying most people typically say they’ll “check with the wife” and then never follow up.

But in true Dax Shepard fashion, he joked about his wife’s reaction too. “My wife is like, ‘Get this — get that f****** brain out of here,’” he said with a hearty laugh, showing the kind of playful relationship the two are known for in Hollywood.

Why Brain Donation Matters

Behind the jokes and casual remarks, the topic of brain donation holds significant importance. Thousands of people globally suffer from traumatic brain injuries every year, and diseases like CTE can only be officially diagnosed after death through the examination of brain tissue.

In recent years, brain banks have been established where donated brains are studied to understand conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and CTE. This research is vital for developing future treatments and preventive measures.

Public figures like Dax Shepard expressing willingness to donate their brains not only raise awareness but also help normalize conversations around brain health and posthumous organ donation.

Shepard’s Openness About Mental and Physical Health

Dax Shepard has long been open about his struggles with addiction, his journey to sobriety, and his experiences with physical injuries. As someone who has dealt with both physical and mental health challenges, his interest in supporting brain research comes as no surprise to his fans.

Over the years, Shepard has shared numerous personal stories on Armchair Expert, making it one of the most listened-to podcasts in the world. His ability to combine humor with sincerity is a big part of his charm and success.
