Bomb Threat Targets IndiGo Flight from Chandigarh to Mumbai, Airport Placed on High Alert
Mumbai:
Security was tightened at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Monday night after authorities received a bomb threat targeting an IndiGo flight arriving from Chandigarh.
According to reports from Indian media outlets, the threat was communicated via a phone call to the airport’s emergency hotline, warning of a possible explosive device onboard the incoming flight. In response, airport security agencies activated emergency protocols and placed the airport on high alert.
The IndiGo aircraft, which safely landed at Mumbai Airport last night, was immediately moved to a secure isolation area. A full-scale security sweep of the aircraft was carried out by bomb disposal squads, CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) personnel, and local police.
"A comprehensive search operation was conducted aboard the flight and in the surrounding area," a senior airport official told the media. "No suspicious object was found, and the situation was declared safe after standard safety checks."
While no explosives were discovered, Mumbai Police have launched an investigation to trace the source of the hoax call and identify those responsible. The threat caused temporary disruptions in airport operations, with heightened security checks for incoming and outgoing flights.
Recurring Hoax Threats in India
This incident follows a pattern of bomb threats made against Indian airports, airlines, railway stations, and educational institutions in recent years. Most of these threats have turned out to be hoaxes but have led to increased vigilance and temporary disruptions.
In April this year, several schools in Delhi and Mumbai received bomb threat emails, prompting evacuations and searches. In January, a similar scare occurred at Hyderabad Airport, which was also ultimately declared a false alarm.
Authorities continue to urge the public to refrain from making prank calls or hoax threats, as such acts are punishable under Indian law and can lead to serious criminal charges.
IndiGo Issues Statement
Following the incident, IndiGo Airlines released a brief statement:
“We confirm that IndiGo flight 6E-XXX operating from Chandigarh to Mumbai received a security alert. Following the protocol, the aircraft was taken to an isolated bay and thoroughly inspected by security agencies. No threat was found, and operations resumed as normal. We apologize for the inconvenience caused to our passengers.”
Airport Operations Restored
Normal flight operations at Mumbai Airport resumed shortly after the search concluded and authorities declared the area safe. Passengers onboard the affected flight were allowed to disembark after a delay but were unharmed and reported no unusual occurrences during the journey.
Security agencies have assured the public that additional safety measures are being maintained at sensitive airports nationwide in light of recurring threats.
