Woman Killed in Axe Attack at Warsaw University

Warsaw, Poland – May 8, 2025:
A tragic incident unfolded at the University of Warsaw on Wednesday evening when a woman was killed in a brutal axe attack on the university’s main campus. Authorities have confirmed the victim was a 53-year-old university staff member, and a 39-year-old security guard who intervened was seriously injured.

Incident Details

According to police reports, the attacker — identified as a 22-year-old Polish man — entered the university campus at around 18:40 local time (16:40 GMT) and made his way to the Auditorium Maximum, the university's largest lecture hall.

The woman, reportedly working as a porter, died at the scene from her injuries. The university security guard who rushed to her aid sustained critical injuries and is currently hospitalized.

Attacker in Custody

The assailant, a third-year law student at the university, was swiftly apprehended by authorities. While his precise motives remain unknown, investigators have confirmed that he is Polish but not originally from Warsaw. A local prosecutor is leading the ongoing inquiry.

University and Official Reactions

The University of Warsaw issued a statement describing the incident as a "huge tragedy" and declared Thursday a day of mourning, with all academic activities and classes suspended.

“We express our great sorrow and sympathy to the family and loved ones,” said Rector Alojzy Nowak in a heartfelt message to the university community.

Justice Minister Adam Bodnar, who was attending a nearby lecture event on campus, confirmed he was informed about the attack by his state protection officers. He commended one of his officers for immediately rushing to assist the injured guard.

Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski also condemned the incident, calling it a "macabre crime" and emphasizing the need for strict punishment against such violent acts.

Campus Events Cancelled

In light of the tragedy, the university announced the cancellation of its annual Juwenalia music festival, which was scheduled for Friday and Saturday. The decision reflects the community's collective mourning and the gravity of the attack.

Public Shock and Mourning

The incident has sent shockwaves throughout Poland’s academic community and the wider public. Social media platforms have been flooded with messages of grief, sympathy, and calls for justice.

Authorities have assured that a comprehensive investigation is underway, and security measures at educational institutions across Warsaw are being reassessed.
