Tragedy at Notting Hill Carnival: Shakeil Thibou Jailed for Murder of Cher Maximen
A young mother’s life was tragically cut short during one of London’s most famous festivals. Cher Maximen, a vibrant and beloved 32-year-old woman, was fatally stabbed at the Notting Hill Carnival in front of her three-year-old daughter.
The man responsible, 20-year-old Shakeil Thibou, has now been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 29 years. The sentencing took place at the Old Bailey, one of the UK's most well-known courts.
How the Incident Unfolded
The fatal incident happened on August 25 last year, just off the main carnival parade route. What should have been a day of music, culture, and celebration turned into a scene of violence.
Cher had been enjoying the festivities with friends when a fight broke out involving several men. Sadly, she became caught up in the chaos.
Judge Philip Katz KC, who sentenced Thibou, described the attack as “brazen” and “terrifying.” The judge noted how Thibou carried out the stabbing in broad daylight, surrounded by families, festivalgoers, and police officers.
The violence was so intense that even the police were outnumbered and struggled to control the situation. Footage from police body cameras later showed just how quickly the fight escalated.
Thibou’s Role and Sentencing
During the trial, it was revealed that Shakeil Thibou came to the carnival armed with a large knife, clearly prepared to engage in violence. The prosecution also found another blade in his room later.
Thibou was convicted of murder in April 2025. At his sentencing, he appeared in court wearing a medical face mask and a blue beanie hat, remaining emotionless throughout the hearing.
Judge Katz told him:
"You were so fired up that you didn’t hesitate to use your knife. You were so brazen it was carried out in front of police officers."
Involvement of Thibou’s Brothers
Shockingly, the violent incident also involved Thibou’s two brothers:
-
Shaeim Thibou, aged 22, was found guilty of assaulting PC Oliver Mort, a police officer who tried to intervene. He received a six-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months.
-
Sheldon Thibou, 25, was convicted of violent disorder and assaulting PC Mort. He is due to be sentenced at a later date.
Judge Katz warned Shaeim:
"If you think loyalty to your brothers enables you to break the law, you are very much mistaken."
Cher Maximen: A Life Remembered
Cher Maximen was more than just a victim. She was a mother, daughter, granddaughter, friend, and an energetic, lively woman known for lighting up every room she entered.
Her family and friends described her as someone with a “bright light” and infectious personality. She grew up in Bristol and later moved to London, where she worked in music and entertainment.
Her cousin, Lawrence Hoo, told Sky News:
"She lit up the room. You would know when Cher was there — her energy filled any space. She was a very bright light."
The Impact on Cher’s Daughter and Family
Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of this tragedy is that Cher’s three-year-old daughter witnessed the horrifying scene. The child was present when her mother was fatally injured and has since been left without her loving parent.
Lawrence Hoo added:
"The feeling of loss is overwhelming, but so is the feeling of rage. Her daughter is aware that something terrible happened to her mother that day."
In a victim impact statement, Cher’s grandmother Vyleen Maximen described the unbearable pain the family now carries:
"Cher was my first-born grandchild, my friend. Thirty-two years of loving, laughing, and living together. I won’t see you get married or have more children. The hole in my heart will never be filled."
Police Reaction and Public Response
Following the conviction, Detective Chief Inspector Alex Gammampila condemned the senseless violence:
"Cher was a loving mother who went to Notting Hill Carnival to enjoy what should have been a carefree day. Instead, her life was ended in the most senseless way."
He highlighted how Shakeil Thibou arrived at the carnival not to celebrate but to cause harm, bringing a deadly weapon with him.
The case has shocked the public and drawn attention to the growing problem of knife crime in London, especially during large public events.
