Pakistan’s Defense Minister Warns of Full-Scale War Amid Escalating Tensions with India
Islamabad (May 8, 2025):
Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has voiced serious concerns about the possibility of a full-scale war between Pakistan and India, as tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors continue to rise sharply.
In an exclusive interview with CNN, Khawaja Asif stated that while Pakistan has no desire to escalate the conflict, it is India’s continued aggression and violations of international borders that are pushing the region toward a wider confrontation.
“There is no doubt that Pakistan is fully prepared for a full-scale war,” said the Defense Minister, adding that the Indian government’s hostile actions are making the situation increasingly dangerous.
Background to Rising Tensions
The latest wave of hostility was triggered after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India-administered Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, which killed several tourists. In retaliation, Indian forces carried out overnight air and drone strikes on urban areas in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan’s Punjab province between May 6 and 7.
According to official statements from Pakistan:
-
Five Indian warplanes were shot down, including three Rafale jets.
-
Several military check posts and a brigade headquarters were destroyed.
-
The Indian Army reportedly raised a white flag at the Chura complex on the Line of Control (LoC) in a symbolic act of retreat.
National Security Committee’s Response
In light of the recent developments, Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) has granted full operational authority to the Pakistan Army to respond decisively to any further aggression.
“We will protect our sovereignty and territorial integrity at all costs,” reiterated Khawaja Asif, emphasizing Pakistan’s readiness to defend its borders and people.
International Concern
The rapid escalation has alarmed international observers, with calls from Turkey, China, and the United Nations for both nations to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could trigger a larger regional conflict.
The Defense Minister warned that if India continues its provocative actions, the conflict "could inevitably evolve into a full-scale war", urging the international community to intervene diplomatically to prevent a catastrophic situation in South Asia.
