Israel-Iran Conflict Intensifies as Civilian Toll Rises and Trump Claims He Can End War Easily
Amid deadly missile strikes between Israel and Iran, Donald Trump claims he can broker peace "easily" as global tensions and oil prices surge.
Trump Says Peace Is Within Reach as Israel-Iran Conflict Escalates
JERUSALEM/DUBAI – June 16, 2025:
The already volatile situation in the Middle East worsened this weekend as Israel and Iran exchanged deadly missile strikes, leaving over a hundred civilians dead and sparking fears of a wider regional war. Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump inserted himself into the crisis, declaring he could “easily” bring peace if Iran agrees to a tougher nuclear deal.
Rising Civilian Deaths and Missile Barrages
Israel launched Operation Rising Lion on Friday, targeting high-level Iranian military leadership and nuclear facilities. In response, Iran fired nearly 270 ballistic missiles, with at least 22 breaching Israel's defense shield and causing devastation in cities like Tel Aviv, Bat Yam, and Haifa.
At least 13 people in Israel and over 130 in Iran have been confirmed dead, many of them women and children. A particularly devastating strike in Tehran leveled a 14-storey apartment building, killing 60 people in a single attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed retaliation, saying Iran “will pay a heavy price for the murder of civilians.” Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian responded by promising “more decisive and severe” action if attacks continue.
Strategic Targets and Global Impact
Israel’s strikes hit critical fuel and energy infrastructure, including Tehran’s Shahran oil depot and facilities in the South Fars gas field, the world’s largest. Although Israel has not yet attacked oil export terminals, traders are bracing for market shocks. Oil prices have already jumped 9%, and further escalation could send them soaring when markets open Monday.
Citizens in both countries are taking refuge in bomb shelters, subways, and mosques, fearing more overnight strikes.
Trump Steps In: "Deal Can Be Done Easily"
On Truth Social, Donald Trump distanced the U.S. from Israeli military action but warned Tehran against any move toward U.S. interests:
“If we are attacked by Iran in any way, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before.”
Despite the war footing, Trump claimed peace could be achieved swiftly:
“We can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel and end this bloody conflict.”
However, nuclear talks scheduled between Iran and the U.S. were canceled after Tehran refused to negotiate under bombardment.
Regional Fallout and Uncertain Road Ahead
The broader regional fallout remains unpredictable. Iran’s proxy forces, once a major threat, have been weakened after months of war in Gaza and Lebanon. Even so, Israel says it struck Houthi leadership in Yemen after a missile was launched toward its territory.
As air raid sirens continue to wail and the skies above Tel Aviv and Tehran burn with fire and smoke, the prospect of a drawn-out conflict seems more likely. Netanyahu signaled that Operation Rising Lion could last for weeks, and called on the Iranian public to “rise against their rulers.”
With diplomacy stalled and tensions flaring, the world is watching closely — especially as oil markets, political alliances, and global peace hang in the balance.
