G7 Summit Begins in Canada as World Leaders Seek Unity Amid Deepening Global Divides

KANANASKIS, CANADA:
The 2025 G7 Summit has officially begun in the scenic Canadian Rockies, drawing leaders from the world’s most powerful economies into a high-stakes gathering shadowed by tensions in global trade, security, and diplomacy.

While Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized goals like peacebuilding, critical mineral cooperation, and job creation, much of the global attention is focused on US President Donald Trump, whose return to the international stage has many leaders bracing for unpredictability.

Trade, Middle East, and Ukraine at the Center of Talks

Although the official agenda leans heavily on cooperation, diplomats anticipate difficult conversations, particularly on topics such as US-imposed tariffs, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the recent escalation in the Middle East following Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

Trump’s prior appearances at such summits have ended in abrupt exits and broken consensus — a memory still fresh from the last Canadian-hosted summit in 2018, when he withdrew support from the final communique after clashing with then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

No Joint Communique This Time

To avoid similar fallout, Canada has reportedly scrapped plans for a traditional joint communique, opting instead for chair summaries. This move aims to reduce public friction while maintaining engagement with all member states, including the US.

A senior Canadian official noted, “We are focusing on shared action, not statements — it’s about progress over performance.”

Ukraine and the Delicate Dance with Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is among the key guests, hoping to secure ongoing support for his country’s defense and reconstruction efforts. However, expectations are muted. Diplomats suggest that even a peaceful interaction with Trump would count as a diplomatic win, given past tension.

Though Trump promised to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours during his campaign, his administration has yet to deliver a clear diplomatic pathway. A proposed sanctions bill by US senators and a European pressure package may be discussed in sideline talks.

Early Test of Trump’s Global Strategy

This summit is widely viewed as an early indicator of whether Trump intends to rebuild cooperation with US allies or continue his more unilateral approach.

“This is a critical test,” says Max Bergmann of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “Is the US still committed to multilateral formats like the G7?”

Looking Ahead

As the summit unfolds through Tuesday, leaders from India, Australia, South Korea, Brazil, and others are expected to hold side meetings, hoping to align on key issues ranging from AI regulation to climate policy and energy security.

Whether this summit becomes a moment of unity or another episode of friction will depend largely on the tone set by the US — and the reactions it provokes from the rest of the table.
