UK Entrepreneur Turns Classic Car Passion into TV & Film Business Opportunity
A Stoke-on-Trent entrepreneur launches “Cars on Screen,” a platform connecting classic car owners with TV and film studios seeking unique vehicles for productions.
STOKE-ON-TRENT, UK — What started as a casual car purchase has turned into a fast-growing business for Will Morris, a tech entrepreneur and self-declared "petrolhead." His latest venture, Cars on Screen, is shaking up how vehicles are sourced for TV and film sets across the UK.
The idea hit Morris unexpectedly. After buying a Rover Metro GTA, he casually mentioned it to a film studio client during his day job in IT solutions. To his surprise, the studio hinted that such a car could rent for up to £1,000 per week for productions. That revelation sparked the concept for a dedicated platform where vehicle owners can list their cars for hire in films, TV shows, and commercials.
Turning Hobby Into Opportunity
The platform already features over 20 unique cars, ranging from a sleek Aston Martin Vantage V8 to nostalgic models like the Ford Sierra XR4x4 and Nissan Skyline. Many more are available behind the scenes — kept off the website at the request of private owners who still wish to be part of the action.
Studios, Morris explained, are often in search of "period-correct" vehicles for background scenes or action-ready cars that actors can actually drive on camera. From turning a Vauxhall Vectra into a police cruiser to supplying vehicles for a 1998-era production filming in Bristol, the business is already off to a dynamic start.
Film-Set Excitement with a Practical Edge
Morris has teamed up with Simon Wright, a longtime friend who now serves as development manager. Wright, who has joined him on sets, describes the behind-the-scenes process of automotive filming as "very exciting and unpredictable."
What makes Cars on Screen even more appealing to studios is the cost. “This gives production teams a cost-effective alternative to sourcing through traditional automotive prop houses,” Wright noted.
A Growing Market with Creative Potential
Though still expanding its catalog, Cars on Screen is catching attention. As the UK’s creative industries boom, Morris believes this offshoot of his IT business could become his primary venture.
Even his accountant agrees. “He thinks Cars on Screen might outgrow our tech work — and honestly, I’m starting to believe it,” said Morris with a smile.
With vintage charm, practicality, and a dose of cinematic flair, this venture is not only connecting car lovers with the entertainment world, but also giving old rides a chance to shine under the spotlight.
