Five Miraculously Survive 36 Hours in Alligator-Infested Swamp After Bolivia Plane Crash

Trapped atop a plane in an Amazon swamp surrounded by alligators and an anaconda, five passengers beat the odds and were rescued after 36 hours.

In a harrowing tale of survival, five people have been rescued after enduring 36 terrifying hours stranded on a small plane in an alligator-infested swamp in the Amazon jungle. The incident unfolded in Bolivia’s remote Amazonas region, where the plane was forced to make an emergency landing after suffering engine failure.

Missing for 48 Hours in the Amazon

The small aircraft vanished from radar in the Beni Department in central Bolivia on Thursday, prompting an urgent search and rescue operation. Local fishermen eventually spotted the stranded plane on Friday, ending nearly two days of growing fears.

The passengers — three women, a child, and 29-year-old pilot Andres Velarde — were miraculously found in excellent condition, according to Wilson Avila, director of the region’s emergency operations centre.

An Emergency Landing in Deadly Waters

Pilot Andres Velarde recounted the terrifying ordeal, revealing that an engine failure forced him to land the plane near the Itanomas River while en route from Baures to the city of Trinidad in northern Bolivia.

“The plane started losing altitude, and I had no choice but to land it in a swamp near a lagoon,” Velarde explained to local media.

What followed was a survival scenario straight out of a thriller — the five survivors were surrounded by alligators that came within three metres of them. “We couldn’t move, we couldn’t drink water, and we couldn’t leave the plane because of the alligators,” Velarde said. To make matters worse, they even spotted an anaconda in the water nearby.

Surviving on Cassava Flour and Sheer Willpower

During the 36 hours spent atop the wreckage, the group survived by eating cassava flour one of the passengers had carried with them. Velarde believes that petrol leaking from the damaged aircraft may have deterred the predators from getting any closer.

Rescue and Relief

After the aircraft was spotted by local fishermen, a helicopter was dispatched to evacuate the survivors to a nearby hospital. Officials have since confirmed that all five are in good health.

Ruben Torres, Director of the Beni Region Health Department, addressed the intense public speculation surrounding the incident, stating, “There were a lot of theories after the plane went missing, but I’m extremely happy that we could come together as institutions to find and save these lives.”

A Miraculous Survival Story

This extraordinary rescue highlights the unpredictability and danger of flying in remote jungle areas — and the resilience of the human spirit when faced with nature’s most fearsome challenges.
