Aircraft Crashes in India’s Punjab Amid Cross-Border Tensions with Pakistan

Bathinda, Punjab (CNN):
As cross-border military tensions escalated between India and Pakistan overnight, an aircraft reportedly crashed in northern India’s Punjab state, according to local eyewitnesses and an official.

The incident occurred around 1:15 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday in Aklain Kalan village, Bathinda district, roughly coinciding with Pakistan’s claim of having shot down five Indian military jets in retaliation for an earlier Indian airstrike.

Eyewitness Accounts

Speaking to CNN, an agricultural worker in the village said he heard a loud explosion and witnessed an aircraft crash into a nearby field.

“It was an unidentified aircraft that had crashed. We rushed to it and sparks were coming out of it,” he recalled.

He claimed one person was killed and several others injured in the fire that followed, adding that he captured videos of the scene but was instructed by authorities to delete them.

A local grocery store owner also described the terrifying moment:

“It was very scary. We all sat and stared at the fire. After the aircraft fell, it continued to make noises before it kept burning. Yes, people have been injured in the village.”

Official Confirmation and Casualties

A local government official confirmed to CNN that an aircraft had indeed crashed in the village around 2:00 a.m., describing it as "unidentified" but adding that “it seems to be ours” — implying it may have been an Indian military aircraft.

While the Indian government and military have yet to comment on the incident, local Indian media reports corroborated news of a crash at the same location and time, reporting one death and nine injuries.

Dr Dheera Gupta, a physician at a nearby government hospital, confirmed to CNN that 10 people were brought in following the crash, with one declared dead upon arrival.

Unclear Ownership and Connection to Ongoing Conflict

At this time, it remains unclear whether the downed aircraft belonged to the Indian Air Force or another entity. The crash took place around the same period Pakistan claimed it had downed multiple Indian jets, including three Rafales, a MiG-29, and a Su aircraft, though these claims have not been independently verified.

No official acknowledgment has been made by Indian authorities about any aircraft losses.

Ongoing Tensions

The incident comes amid rising hostilities between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, following an overnight Indian airstrike into Pakistani territory that reportedly targeted civilian areas, leaving 26 people dead, according to Pakistani officials.

Both sides remain on high alert, and cross-border tensions have sparked increased concern both regionally and internationally.
